Georgian Sampler, 1807, by Elizabeth Horn Aged 12. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, green, pale green, copper, silver, black and pink. Verses read, 'The Lord My Pasture shall Prepare And Feed Me With A Shepherds Care His Presence shall My Wants Suploy And Guard Me With A Watchfull Eye My Noon Day Walks He Shall Attend And All My Midnight Hours Defend.' And another verse on the right, 'Tho In The Paths Of Death I Tread With Gloomey Horror Over Spread My Stedfast Heart Shall Fear No Ill For Thou O Lord Art With Me Still Thy Friendly Crook Shall Give Me Aid And Guide Me Through the Dreadful Shade.'. Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Horn Her Work In The 12 Ye Of Her Age 1807'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a shepherd and shepherdess looking over their flock of sheep. The lady holds a bird and a shepherds crook, the gentleman a shepherds crook and a pipe. A large moth sits in a tree between them. Two rare leopard motifs on the bottom. A potted flowering plant at the top. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.
