Georgian Sampler, 1804, by Maria Good. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, blue, red, gold, silver, black, pink and brown. Verses read, 'JESUS permit they gracious name to stand, As the first effort of an infant's hand; And while her fingers o'er this canvas move, Engage her tender heart to seek thy love; With thy dear Children Let her share a pact, And write thy name Thyself upon her heart.' And another entitled, 'VIRTUE', 'Virtue's the chiefest Beauty of the mind, The noblest Ornament of Human-kind; Virtue's our Safeguard and our guiding star, That stirs up Reason when our senses err.'. Signed and dated 'MARIA GOOD Finished this Sampler in the Twelfth Year of her Age 1804'. A good set of motifs, some rare, including a horse with a jockey, a house with a garden, birds, stags, deer, fir trees, blossoming trees, lions, dogs, fruit baskets, hearts, owls, crowns and angels. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is loose card. Frame backed with paper and sealed with tape.
