Georgian Sampler, 1811, by Ann Mitchison Aged 15. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, copper, silver, black and green. Signed and dated, 'ANN MITCHISON'S WORK IN THE 15TH YEAR OF HER AGE JANUARY 24th 1811'. Unusual set of motifs, including a wonderfully executed Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk. Little beads for their eyes. A stag and a sheep stand next to them. There are clouds in the sky above, with a sun and moon either side. Also, a house, a monkey next to a pair of figures holding birds (falconers?), a windmill, potted flowering plants, dogs and peacocks. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.
