Georgian Scottish Sampler, stitched in 1812 by Barbara Key. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pink, dark brown, copper, gold, silver and black. Family initials, IK, MB, HK, IK, MK, IK. Signed, 'BARBARA KEY' and dated, '1812'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a country house with a garden and animals (goats?). Smoke coming out of the chimneys and is that someone peering out the top window? Also, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, trees, rabbits and birds. Framed in an old wooden frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wooden board. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.
