Antique Sampler, 1811, by Mary Gentles Aged 10. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. A finely worked, detailed meandering strawberry border. Colours green, red, blue, brown and gold. Family initials TH, HB, JG, TG, WG, HG, AG, JG. Verse reads, 'O tis a lovely Thing for youth To walk, Benimes(?) in Wisdoms Way To fear a Lie, To speak the Truth That we may Trust, To all they say.'. Signed and dated, 'Mary GentLes' and, 'MG aged 10 years 1811.'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, Adam & Eve standing either side of the fruit laden tree of life, a snake coiled around its trunk, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, rabbits, birds and fruit baskets. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.
