Antique Scottish Sampler, c.1821, by Deas Ure. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pink, blue, green, gold, silver, black and brown. Family initials, 'IL', 'EM', 'JJ' and 'RA'. Verse entitled 'David And The Ark Of The Covenant' reads, 'Abram forbear the anGel cryd, Thy faith is Known thy love is tryd, Thy son shall live and in thy seed, Shall the whole earth be blessd indeed.'. Signed 'Deas Ure aged 11'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden and peacock, Abraham sacrificing Isaac, fruit baskets, crowns with initials, a sailing ship, titled 'THE MARGARET', potted flowering plants, a dog, birds, flowers, trees laden with fruit, a rabbit, and a stag. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape. Some handwritten provenance notes included, dating the sampler to circa 1821 - see photos.
