17thC Band Sampler by Elizabeth Rogers. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Consists of a variety of beautifully worked bands. At the top are bands of cutwork and whitework. The lower half has a number of very finely worked bands, including 'boxers' in tunics, stags, flower arrangements, acorns and many different patterns. Colours blue, light brown, gold, silver, black, pink and green. Signed 'ELIZABETH ROGERS'. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to dark red silk which is stretched over board. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape. Given dimensions are of the sampler only. Overall frame size is 28.5ins (72.5cm) high by 14.4ins (36.5cm) wide. There is a display plaque attached to the bottom of the frame. It reads, 'SAMPLER OF ELIZABETH POSTLETHWAYT. (BORN ROGERSON) 1678-1730.'
