Victorian Sampler, 1838, by Mary Hannah Beesley. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, silver, black, brown and pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads, 'While some in folly's pleasures roll, And seek the joys that hurt the soul; Be mine, that silent calm repast, A peaceful conscience to the last. Come then my soul be this thy guest, And leave to folly's sons the rest; With this thou ever mayst be gay, And night shall brighten into day. Blest saviour' cheer that darksome way, And lead me to the realms of day; To milder skies and brighter plains, Where everlasting sunshine reigns.'. Signed and dated 'Mary Hannah Beesley May 8th 1838'. A scattering of motifs, including flowers and fruit baskets. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to paper. Frame backed with wood and card and sealed with tape.
