Georgian Sampler, 1758, by Peggey Gibbs. The sampler is worked in silk a on linen ground, in cross stitch. Repeating triangles border. Colours green, blue, dark brown, gold, silver, red and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verses read, 'Love Thou The Lord and he Will be, A Tender father unto Thee. Remember Well and Bare in Mind, a Faithful Friend Is hard To Find. And When you Find Them Trusty and Tru, Chang Not The Ould Won For the new.'. Signed and dated 'Peggey GIBBS Her SAMPLER MADE IN The 8 Year OF her Age 1758'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a sailing ship with a figure on board, swans, lions, birds, angels, flowers, squirrels, trees, crowns, potted flowering plants and dogs. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is loose mounted on calico slip on mountboard card. The sampler is pressed up against the glass. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
