1779 Sampler by Sarah Kaye. Worked in silks on unbleached fine linen ground in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, blue, gold, silver, white, black, cream and red. Verse entitled 'An Hymn for the Lords Day Evening' reads, 'I - Lord how delightful it is to see/ A whole Assembly worship thee/ At once they Sing at once they pray/ They hear of Heaven and learn the way/
II - I have been there and still would go/ It is like a little Heaven below/ Not all my pleasure and my play/ Shall tempt me to forget this Day/
III - O write upon my Memory Lord/ The Txtes and Doctrines of thy word/ that I may break thy Laws no more/ But love thee better than before/. IV - With Thoughts of Christ and Things divine/ Fill up this foolish Heart of mine/ That hoping pardon through his Blood/ I may Lie down and wake with God. Signed 'Sarah Kaye' and dated 1779. A wonderful set of motifs, all finely embroidered, including a unique pair of birds, potted flowering plants, spectacular butterflies, bugs, British crowns and coronets, hearts, and lions. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounting: Sampler is taped at the edges and tacked to a wood board. Frame backed with card and sealed.
