Antique Sampler, 1830, by Sarah Bennett. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Rolling waves border. Colours green, gold, blue and white. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-0. Verses read, 'A Man That Doth On Riches Set, His Mind Strives To Take Hold on Shadows And The Wind With Food And Raiment. Then Contented Be Ask Not For Riches Nor For Poverty.' And the second verse entitled, 'ON YOUTH' reads, 'Fragrant The Rose Is But It Fades In Time, The Violet Sweet But Quickly Past the Prime. White Lilies Hang Their Heads And Soon Decay. And White Snow In Minutes Melts Away. Such And So Withring Are Our Earthly Joys, Which Time Or Sickness Speedily Destroys. The Grass Is Green The Rose Is Red. Here Is My Work When I Am Dead.'. Signed and dated 'Sarah Bennett Finished This Work Febry Th 15th Aged 16 In Yer 1830'. A scattering of motifs, including birds, potted flowering plants and stags. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to linen. Frame backed with chipboard.
