Antique Sampler, 1839, by Gifford Elizabeth Saggers. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, yellow, light brown, black, navy blue and greens. Verse entitled, 'The tear of sympathy' reads, 'No radiant pearl, which crested fortune wears,>No gem, that twinkling hangs from beauty's ears,>Nor the bright stars, which night's blue arch adorn,>Nor rising suns that gild the vernal morn.>Shine with each lustre, as the tear that breaks,>For others' woe, down Virtue's manly cheeks.'. Signed and dated, 'Gifford Elizabeth Saggers Finish'd this July 30th 1839. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including potted flowering plants, lions, birds, fir trees, hearts, a flower basket and stags. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Acid free card backing. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card.
