Staffordshire group with a military theme which features a general holding a flag, on horseback. And a cannon, stood on an oval base. The piece is titled, 'GNL SIMPSON' . Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Flatback, decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the reverse. This piece represents Sir James Simpson (1792-1868) served with the Grenadier Guards during the Peninsular War of 1812-1813. In 1845 he was second in command to Sir Charles Napier during the Kacchi expedition. In 1854 he was appointed Chief of Staff during the Crimean War, for which in 1855 he was awarded a knighthood for his services and the capture of Sebastopol.
