Circa 1660, French, Small Embroidered Religious Needlework Panel. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Wood and coloured paper backing. The embroidery has a floral surround, which is worked in silk, on a silk ground. The floral border is embellished with metal sequins and threads. The inset central panel has Jesus Christ, laying down, after the crucifixion. Surrounded by small stones with paper labels that read, 'Pain Sacre,' and 'S. Reliques'. Scrollwork borders made from gilded card. And an intricate metal thread divider/border between the panel and the floral surround.
