The embroidery is worked in silk, on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. The secene depicts HMS Grafton - this ship served in the China sea from 1895-1896. The ship scene is surrounded by flags, which include the Union Jack. There is a photograph of a young boy in sailors uniform, with an inscription above reading, 'REMEMBERANCE OF MY CRUISE IN JAPAN CHINA'.
