Minton Majolica jug/pitcher which features pictorial scenes of past and present. Designed by Henry James Townsend for Summerly's Art Manufactures. Titled, 'The Two Drivers', scenes on either side of the jug depict representations of the social and technological history of 'Present' (1848) and 'Past' (1800). The 'Past' has a plump stage coach driver carrying a whip. And a pictorial scene of a pub/tavern with people outside. Pub sign reads, 'The Travelers Rest by John Bull'. Horse and coach in the background. 'Present' has a train driver. The scene depicts a steam train, a viaduct and people beside the railway line. Embellished around the top and handle with hops leaves and flowers. Colouration: blue, green, brown, are predominant. Marks include a factory specific date cipher for the year 1857.
