19th Century sampler by Elizabeth Whitley Hancock

Victorian. 15ins by 15ins. Framed in an old wood frame with no glass, tacked to a card backing.

Verse reads 'This is a faithful saying and worthy of all accept tion that Christ Jesus came into the world to save others of whom I am chief.'

Signed 'Elizabeth Whitley Hancock'.

The sampler is worked in silk and in cross stitch throughout on a linen ground. Colours blue, red, green, gold and beige. A good set of motifs including potted flowering plants, fruit baskets,

birds, stars, a heart, and a crown, with a meandering strawberry border.

CONDITION: Generally good. One tear, (illustrated) approx 2 inches long and is located in the top left hand side. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Unevenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
