1878 sampler by Emily Kelland
Victorian, dated 1878. 14.25ins by 14.75ins. Professionally framed in an old wood frame with glass. Stitched over board with wood and brown paper dust cover.


The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.


Simple line border with zig zag border and inner line border.

Colors red, purple, light green, orange, green and cream.
Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-18.
Verse reads
'Take up thy cross and follow Christ,
Nor think till death to lay it down,
For only he who bears the cross
May hope to wear the glorious crown.'.

Signed and dated 'Emily Kelland Age 11 years 1878.A.D.'.

A few motifs including a house with a garden, blossoming trees, hearts, birds

and flowers.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. Two patchy stains, illustrated.


Some stitch losses to the numbers, verse, and letters, illustrated.



Colors are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No color run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
