William IV, dated 1836. 14.75ins by 17ins wide. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with cardboard mount and rippled, old glass. Stitched to card with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in fine wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, cream, blue, pale blue, pale green, light brown, gold, black, orange, red and pink.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-14.

Verse reads

'Thrice happy is the youth

Who morning noon and night

Reads the blest page of sacred truth

And makes it his delight

While in our blooming days

And blest with means to rise

O may religion guide our ways

And make us truly wise'.

Signed and dated 'Eliza Smith her work aged 8 years 1836'.

Good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, trees,

a crown, fir trees

and potted flowering plants .

CONDITION: Good. One hole, illustrated.

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to the border, illustrated.

Some colours are faded, but still well defined. Colour run around the black threads of signature, worst illustrated.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
