1883 Paper Sampler by Emily Jane Riley

Victorian, dated 1883. 7.75ins by 5.75ins wide. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass. Loose with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on paper ground, in a variety of stitches.

Zig zag and rolling waves border.

Colours blue, black, grey and green.

Verse reads

'Create in me a clear

Heart O God and

Renew a right

Spirit within me.

Cast me not a way.

From thy Presence

And taKe not thy

Holy sPirit

From me.'.

Signed and dated 'Emily. Jane. Riley. 1883. March. 6'.

A few motifs including dogs

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Very Good. No holes. Pale staining around edge, illustrated.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
