1793 sampler by Martha Callis
George III, dated 1793. 19ins by 18.75ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass, fixed to card with wooden dust cover.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.


Meandering floral border.

Colours dark brown, pale blue, gold, black, pink, yellow and cream.
Verse reads
'And will the glorious Lord descend..
To be my father and my friend ..
Then let my songs with angels join
Heaven is secure if God be mine '.

Signed and dated ' MARTHA. CALLIs 1793 LEICESTER'. Leicester is a place in England.



A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including trees laden with fruit and birds perched in their branches,

dogs,


flowers,



potted flowering plants,

butterflies,


fir trees,

trees,

a heart,

birds in flight carrying food in their beaks



and crowns.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes to the edge from tacking and some loss of ground, worst illustrated.





One dark stain to the bottom right corner, illustrated.

Some stitch losses to two of the butterfly motifs and the date, illustrated.



Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Colour run around the dark brown and dark green threads, worst illustrated.



Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing some wear, worst illustrated, but structurally sound.
