Circa 1840 Sampler by Isabella Melles
Victorian, circa 1840. 16.5ins high by 8ins. Framed in an old gilt and wood frame with rippled, old glass. Stitched over card with chip board and brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Simple line border, this is almost hidden by edge of frame.

Colours red, cream, white, black, pink, purple, turquoise and olive green.
Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case, numbers 1-13 and family initials.

Signed 'Isabella Melles'.

A good set of motifs, including a house,

a dog,

a bird,

a potted flowering plant,

a rabbit,

a black cat,

hearts,

crowns,

and flowers.

CONDITION: Good. No holes, but some pulling of the ground, illustrated.

A few patchy light stains, barely visible, illustrated.

Some stitch losses to the family initials, letters of the alphabet, divider lines and motifs, illustrated.

Some colours very faded making them difficult to read. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
