Circa 1880 Woolwork Sampler

Victorian, circa 1880. 10.25ins by 10.25ins wide. Framed in a modern wood veneer frame with glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in wool and cotton on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Triple line border.

Colours pink, blue, green, navy blue, pale blue, pale green, light brown, dark brown, gold, light green, magenta, red and cream.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase with numbers 1-9 and family initials.

A good set of motifs, including a horse in a field,

a dog,

birds,

a fruit basket,

crosses,

crowns,

a lock and key,

a heart

and a goblet.

Bought in Denmark and believed to be Danish.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few small holes to ground and one larger hole to border, worst illustrated.

A few patchy stains, illustrated.

Minor stitch losses to a divider line, border and motifs, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Very slight colour run, worst illustrated.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
