1868 Woolwork sampler by Mary Wilby

Victorian, 1868. 12ins by 16ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, thick maple veneer frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with no dust cover.

The sampler is worked in wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Simple line border.

Colors pink, cream, yellow, green, navy blue, pale blue, pale green, light brown, copper, purple, light green, orange, magenta, red and gold. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9. Signed and dated 'Mary Wilby Aged 10 1868 Gissing'. Gissing is a town in England.

A wonderful set of motifs, including crowns,

dogs,

birds,

flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, fir trees,

goblets

and a heart.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A couple of small holes, illustrated.

Uniform age darkening to the centre of the sampler, illustrated.

Some stitch losses to letters of the alphabets, motifs and the signature, worst illustrated.

Colors are slightly faded, but still well defined. No color run. Stretching is slightly uneven, not detracting. Frame showing wear and chips, worst illustrated, but structurally sound.
