1824 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth James
George IV, dated 1824. 16.75ins by 12.25ins wide. . Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass. Mounted to linen with card and paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.


Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, blue, green, gold, white, pink, light green, black and copper.
Verse reads
'Jesus permit thy gracious Name tostand
As the first efforts of an Infants hand
And while her fingers on the canvas move
Do thou engage her thoughts to seek thy love
Let her with thy dear children have a part
And write thy name thy-self upon her heart'.

Signed and dated 'Elizabeth James , December th 8 th 1824.Aged 8'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including two houses with gardens,



dogs,

butterflies, insects,


birds in bird houses,

flowers,


potted flowering plants,


a fruit tree,

a stag?,

trees,



a church

and a windmill.

CONDITION: Good. A number of small holes and some loss of ground to bottom edge, worst illustrated.







A few pale stain specks, illustrated.


No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear and has a chip to one corner, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
