MOVE TO:
1822 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth West
George IV, dated 1822. 12.5ins by 15.5ins. 1822 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth West.
Framed in an old, possibly original Hogarth frame with rippled, old glass.
Stitched onto cardboard backing. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-16.
A Verse entitled 'Psalm 23' reads 'The Lord my pasture shall prepare. And feed me with shepherds care. His presence shall my wanes supply. And guard me with a watchful eye. My noon day walks he shall attend. And all my midnight hours defend. Though in the paths of death I tread. With gloomy horrors ever spread. My steadfast heart shall fear no ill. For thou O Lord art with me still. Thy friendly crook shall give me aid. And guide me through the dreadful shade.'.
Signed and dated "Elizabeth West Aged 7 Years 1822".
Meandering strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in silk threads throughout.
Green, blue, red, dark brown, copper, silver, pink and gold colour threads used.
A scattering of motifs, including trees, laden with fruit,
flowers, birds and potted flowering plants.
CONDTION: Slightly distressed.
A few holes. The holes (illustrated) are located in the bottom left hand corner
and in the middle right hand side of the sampler.
The holes are barely visible, blending into the backing colour.
No stains. No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.
The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.
No colour run. No stretching.
The frame has a some wear and a 0.25ins chip on the top, illustrated,
but is structurally sound.
