MOVE TO:

1819 Sampler Mary Wakely with Provenance

Late George III, dated 1819. 7.6ins by 20ins. 1819 Sampler Mary Wakely with Provenance.

Framed in a modern, ebonised wooden frame with glass.

Glued onto cardboard backing .

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-10.

Verse/s read 'Tis religion that can give Sweetest Pleasure while we live. Tis Religion must Supply Solid comfort when we die'.

Signed and dated "This work was done by Mary the daughter of George and Sarah Wakely aged 8 years taught by S Wakely Netherbury Dorset the year" and then '18 19' above.

Place name Netherbury is mentioned. This is in Dorset, South West of England.

Divider lines in a number of patterns and stitches.

The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool threads.

Copper, cream, green, gold, pink, silver and grey colour threads used.

A letter of provenance, dated 29th January ?75, from the Netherbury vicarage at Bridport, is attached to the back of the sampler.

It reads 'Dear Madam, I answer to your letter the date would be c. 1818. If we do searches of baptisms we are bound to charge the fees as they have to be accounted for. 30p for a first year and 15p for each year after if done by you in person, half that rate if done by me by post. But I can give you this date without making any charge. I can also tell you that there is a stone just outside the church between the south window and path. The right half of the stone is “In memory of George Wakely who died Decemb. 5 1847 Aged 89 years Also of Sarah his wife who died March 28 1865 Aged 94 years”. The other half is to Henry Bridle Hill and as there was a marriage 20 Jan. 1807 George Wakely and Sarah Hill, it would appear to be a relative. An old rate book gives a George Wakely as owner and occupier 1826. No address or occupation given. As there was a gravestone he might have left a will. He would also be in the 1821 census. I think they are in Dorchester county hall archives but I am not sure. The spelling of Wakely varies a good deal for the same people in the early records. I hope this is some assistance.

Yours sincerely P D May

The lady who owned the sampler seems to have missed the date, which is sewn into the sampler below the verse.

However, the background information given in the letter is very interesting

CONDTION: Good. No holes.

A few slight stains, in the bottom right hand side and the bottom left hand side.

A stitch loss to a letter of the alphabet, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Some stretching, worst illustrated.

Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated,

is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
