Gold Solomons Temple Sampler-Mary Wadsworth.
George III, dated 1806. 18.25ins by 20.25ins. Gold Solomons Temple Sampler-Mary Wadsworth.

Framed in an old, possibly original Hogarth frame with glass. The extreme edges of the sampler are tucked behind the backing board and glued. There is no glue to the front of the sampler. Linen backing.


Worked in a variety of stitches.
Verse/s read 'Still for thy loving kindness Lord, I in thy temple wait, I look to find thee in thy word, Or at thy table meet. Here in thine own apqointed ways, I wait to learn thy will, Silent I stand before thy face, And hear thee say, Be Still.'

and 'I work and own my labour vain, And thus from work I cease, I strive: and see my fruitless pain, Till God crate my peace. I trust in him who stands between, The Father's wrath and me, Jesu, thou great eternal Mean, I look for all from thee.'.

Entitled, signed and dated "A Front View of the Temple of Solomon Done by Mary Wadsworth 1806".


Meandering strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Gold, blue, green, dark brown, copper, black and silver colour threads used.
A monumental shimmering gold silk Temple of Solomon, graces the centre of the sampler.



Other motifs at the bottom include stags,

birds, flowers, potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets,

trees, crowns, rabbits and dogs.
CONDTION: Good.
No holes, but one slight 'frey' to the right of the central tower of the temple, illustrated.

No stains, uniform darkening of canvas throughout.
A couple of veryt minor stitch losses to temple.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.
No colour run. Some slight stretching.
The frame has quite extensive wear, illustrated, but is structurally sound.
