Early George III, dated 1766. 13ins square. 1766 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Tryon.

Unframed with no glass. Loose no backing .The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-20, then 20-70 in steps of 10.

Worked in a variety of stitches.

Sampler has The Lords Prayer, 'Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy Kindom come, Thy will be done in Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this Day our daily bread And forgive us our Trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into Temptation But deliver us from Evil Amen.'.

Signed and dated "Eliz Tryon 1766 Northampton".

Place name Northampton is mentioned. This is a city about half way between London and Birmingham.

Unusual geometric meandering Strawberry-like border.

The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Green, red, copper, gold, silver, black, pink and yellow colour threads used.

Motifs include flowers,

crowns, a mound with a cross on top,

a stag

and a doe, and dogs.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed. A number of holes less than 0.25 inches in size.

The holes are located in the centre,

bottom right hand side ,

top right hand border,

top left hand corner,

top middle

and the bottom middle border of the sampler, all illustrated.

No stains. No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen. No colour run. No stretching.
