Victorian, dated 1874. 12.25ins square. 1874 Colourful Sampler by Jane Pates.
Framed in a modern wooden frame with glass. Loose mounted onto a cardboard backing.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-10.
Signed and dated "Jane Tates Work 1874".
Meandering multicoloured strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout.
Cream, red, yellow, green, dark brown, purple, orange and pink colour threads used.
A good set of motifs, including a large basket of flowers with a floral background,
flowers, dogs, birds and butterflies.
CONDTION: Very Good.
No holes.
A couple of very slight stains to the left of the name, illustrated.
No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. No stretching.
The frame is a little uninspiring, has some wear, illustrated,
but is structurally sound. The sampler isn't very well mounted in the frame, resulting in folds and creases which could be easily flattened out.
