MOVE TO:
1814 Fine Silkwork house Sampler- Lucy Small
George III, dated 1814. 11.5ins by 15.5ins. 1814 Fine Silkwork house Sampler- Lucy Small.
Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Stiched to linen then stretched and tacked to a wooden mounting frame acid free card backing.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-6.
Worked in a variety of stitches.
Verse reads 'Virtue Is The brightest Gem a Maid Can Wear Nor Can The Indies Boast Of One So Fair all Jewels Far Below Its Worth We Find They But aborn The Body That The Mind'.
Signed and dated ''1814 Lucy Harriot Small My Work Done In The Tenth Year Of My age".
Meandering strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in fine silk thread throughout.
Copper, black, gold and silver colour threads used.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house,
stars, a variety of species of birds, flowers,
blossoming trees,
fruit baskets,
potted flowering plants
and other creatures.
CONDTION: Good.
A couple of holes, less than 0.5 inches in size.
The holes (illustrated) are located in the middle left hand side,
in the middle right hand side
and a tiny hole in the centre of the sampler,
and in the bottom right hand side.
The holes are barely visible, blending into the backing colour.
No stains. No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.
The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.
No colour run.
The sampler has become slightly torn away from its backing in the top right hand side, illustrated.
This is only just visible and does not detract from the sampler. The frame has some wear and is coming apart in one or more of the corners, illustrated,
but is still sturdy and in my opinion ready to hang.
