Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

Sampler by Eliza Davies - Alphanum border.

Victorian, circa 1840. 8ins by 8.75ins. Sampler by Eliza Davies - Alphanum border

Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with glass. Possibly glued onto chipboard backing, but easily removed if required.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-15.

Letters and numbers are unconventionaly stitched around the border.

Worked in cross stitch and algerian eye.

Signed ''Eliza Davies".

We purchased a sister sampler by Eliza Davies that bears the date 1839, which confirms the period this sampler was stitched.

The sampler is worked in fine wool thread throughout.

Red, yellow, white, pink, orange, pale blue and green colour threads used.

CONDTION: Good.

No holes. Very slight patchy stains in the bottom centre, illustrated.

A couple of stitch losses to the border.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

No colour run. No stretching.

Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated,

is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
