A Verse entitled 'IN MEMORY OF Joseph Ball Who Departed This Life April 12 1855. Born August 20 1835' reads 'Aged 20 years. Farewell dear parents do not weep, I am not dead I only sleep, I leave a world of trouble behind, A crown of glory I shall find. Lie still dear brother in thy grave, Our tears shall not awake thee, We only wait till death shall come, And then will overtake thee. In prime of life he was cut down, But we will not his loss deplore, But hope that we one day may rise, And meet him on that heavenly shore. Affliction so long time he bore, Physicians were in vain, Till god did please to give him ease, And take him From his pain. Then while our god prolongs this Fleeting breath, Blest sould they bright example let us see, That we may lean with joy to welcome death, And share eternal happiness with thee.

Signed "He Sleeps in Peace. Phebe Ball".

Meandering strawberry border. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Black, red, yellow, green, gold, light green, orange, blue and white colour threads used. Motifs of angels surround the verse,

and at the bottom a tomb flanked by willow trees, symbolic of mourning

CONDTION: Very Good. No holes. A few small rust colored stains, barely noticeable.

A pulled thread to the word 'deplore' and a couple of stitch losses to one strawberry in the border only. Colours are all unfaded as seen when the sampler is turned back on itself. No colour run.
