1877 needlework sampler by Elizabeth Aitken

1877 needlework sampler by Elizabeth Aitken. Victorian, dated 1877. 11.75ins by 9.75ins. Framed in a modern wooden frame with glass. Stitched onto chipboard backing. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1 to 20.

Also possibly parents' initals - JA and EA. Worked in cross stitch throughout. Signed and dated "Elizabeth Aitken 12 Years". Place name 'Bridgeton Parish School' is mentioned.

Meandering strawberry border, tucked behind on the verticals. The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Red, green, cream, beige, olive green and black colour threads used.

A scattering of motifs, including a house, flowers, crowns and fir trees

CONDTION: Very Good. No holes. Few, very small pale stains, worst illustrated.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. The frame is in very good condition and the sampler is ready to hang. The sampler could be easily and safely removed from the frame and backing if required.
