MOVE TO:

1800 Crown sampler by Elizabeth Robinson

George III, date 25th Oct 1760 - 1820 29th Jan. 16ins by 11.5ins. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame, gilded, with rippled, old glass. Loose mounted onto a card backing. Worked in a variety of stitches.

A Verse entitled 'FRIENDSHIP' reads 'Tell me, ye knowing and discerning Few, Where I may find a Friend both firm and true; Who dares stand by Me when in deep Distress, And then his Love and Friendship most express.' Followed by no less than three epigrams 'If Happiness be your Pursuit, Plant Virtue, & contents the Fruit';

'Obey Your Parents'; and 'Constraint in all Things makes the Pleasure less, Sweet is the Love that comes with Willingness' [Oh Lordy, how attitudes do change. Sixty years later constraint was regarded in good society as a virtue].

Signed and dated 'Elizabeth Robinson Finish'd this Work October the 1st Anno Domini 1800'.

Meandering strawberry border.

The sampler is worked in silk thread throughout. Black, blue, green, copper, white, gold and red colour threads used. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including central glowing crown,

heart, birds,

flowers, stags, fruit baskets, squirrels,

dogs, deer, trees, and angels.

CONDTION: Good. Two holes (illustrated) located in the bottom right hand corner.

Uniform darkening of the backing canvas, not detracting. One stain in the top right hand corner. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. The frame has some wear, illustrated, but is structurally sound.
