Scottish Sampler by Ann Murdoch, unfinished. Victorian, circa 1880. 26ins by 20ins wide. Loose, unframed.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase, numbers 1-10 and family initials GM AM GM EM CM JCT JJL GEMc AF CK EM JCB JAT AMc GMc PMc AMc CMc CI JL JB JB GB WMM WJM TCM WM GM SA JAA DAB . Worked in cross stitch throughout.
Signed "Ann Murdoch".
Floral border.
The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Red, cream, blue, yellow, light brown, white, black, magenta, pale green and green colour threads used. A few motifs including birds on branches, rose and floral sprays, and a central garden gazebo.
CONDTION: Slightly distressed with some stitch losses to the border and to the letters, illustrated.
One small hole to the ground beside the gazebo, illustrated.
One small stain above the gazebo, illustrated.
Otherwise in very good condition with no fading or color run or stretching.
