Victorian, dated 1855. 9.75ins by 11.75ins. 1855 Red&White Verse Sampler Jane Manners.
Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wooden frame with rippled, old glass.
Stitched onto linen backing.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-28.
A Verse entitled 'The Seasons of our Life' reads 'Serve the Lord of Lore and Truth, In the spring days of your youth, Yield to Him the flower and prime, Of your vigorous Summer time, Let the fruits of prayer and praise, Crown the Autumn of your days, And your Winter pass away, Into changeless heavenly day.'.
Signed and dated "Jane Charlotte Manners aged 10 Nov '55".
Zig zag border.
The sampler is worked in cotton-like threads throughout.
Red colour threads used.
CONDTION: Good.
A few holes. The holes (illustrated) are located in the centre.
The holes are barely visible, blending into the backing colour.
No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run. No stretching.
The frame has some wear on the corners, worst illustrated,
but is structurally sound.
