Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1796 Adam&Eve Sampler by Ann Thom

George III, dated 1796. 8.75ins by 10ins. 1796 Adam&Eve Sampler by Ann Thom.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with rippled, old glass.

Stitched onto cardboard backing.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in lowercase and numbers 1-15.

Verse reads 'Adam and Eve wilst (sic) inocent (sic) in paradice (sic) were plac'd but soon the serpent by his ways this happy pair disgrac'd. In Adams Fall we sined (sic) all.' Wonderful naivety.

Signed and dated "Ann Thom Markt This In The 15 year of her Age 1796".

Divider lines in a number of patterns.

The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Pink, blue, green, silver, gold and copper colour threads used.

A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life, a snake coiled around its trunk,

a lion, a dog, flowers, a potted flowering plant, stags and birds.

CONDTION: Very Good.

No holes. Very slight patchy light stains, barely visible.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.

No colour run. No stretching.

The frame has some wear, illustrated,

but is structurally sound.
