1850 Pictorial sampler by Phebe Ball. Victorian, date 20th June 1837- 1901 22nd Jan. 23ins wide, 17ins in height. Unframed with frilly surround

(picture above shows sticky tape used to hold sampler for photography; pink tinge is a photographic effect not present in reality)

Loosely stitched to backing.

Worked in cross stitch throughout. Signed "Phebe Bell Her Work Finished November 4 1850". Meandering, floral border depicting leaves and flowers.

The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout. Black, cream, red, yellow, green, gold, white, pink, purple, light green, orange, magenta, blue and brown colour threads used. One central picture of a peacock in a garden with trees, church in background

CONDTION: Good. No holes. Uniform darkening of the backing canvas save for two bands of undarkened ground.

Four small stains, worst illustrated. A few stitch losses only to the three leaf clover top right. One repair below the word 'Her'.

A further repair, or possibly just broken threads to the ground, top right.

Colours are slightly faded, but still good and strong. No colour run.
