1834 Silkwork Sampler by Alice Cooper

William IV, dated 1834. 16.25ins by 13ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, cream, dark blue, dark brown, copper, light green, olive green and gold.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-12.

Verse reads

'Attend ye young who happy live

Beneath a parents eye

To them returns of duty give

Who all your wants supply

Whose every care and every Joy

Are that you may improve

And no misconduct e,er destroys

An anxious parents love'.

Signed and dated 'Alice Cooper Aged 8 years 1834'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large basket of flowers,

dogs,

butterflies,

diamonds,

birds,

fleur d'lys

and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few small holes, mainly to edges, illustrated.

A number of stain specks, illustrated, and uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to letters of the alphabets, divider lines and motifs, illustrated.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

Colour run around some of the dark green threads, worst illustrated.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
