19thC sampler by Emily Ann Bodfield

19thC sampler by Emily Ann Bodfield. 12ins by 11ins wide. Framed in a modern wood frame with ultra-violet proof conservation glass. Mounted onto an acid free backing linen backing. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase along the top. Worked in cross stitch in silk thread throughout. Green, cream, blue, dark brown, light brown and black colors used. Verse reads 'True happiness is not the growth of earth. The toll is fruitless if you seek it here. Tis an emoth(?) of celestial birth. And never blooms but in celestial air'.

Signed 'Emily Ann Bodfield'.

Unusual set of motifs, including a traditional meandering motif at the top,

birds either side of a central woodland house, flowers,

floral arrangements in vases and two delightfully embroidered dogs.

CONDTION: Professionally conserved. A number of holes throughout.

No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are good with no noticable fading. No colour run. Frame has slight damage, but is attractive and sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
