1826 Sampler by Ann Peat

George IV, dated 1826. 12.5ins by 12.25ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours dark green, cream, olive green, pale blue, light brown, blue, copper, gold, magenta and dark brown.

Verse reads

'BESET with snares on ev'ry hand

In life's uncertain path I stand

Saviour Divine diffuse thy light

To guide my doubtful

footsteps right'.

Signed and dated 'Ann Peat finished this Work October the 23 d 1826'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including angels,

stars,

suns,

a dog,

birds,

butterflies,

a recumbent stag,

a goat,

potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets,

a man

and crowns.

CONDITION: Generally Good. Three holes to edge, illustrated.

Dark patchy stain to top right corner and top edge, illustrated, and slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to signature, date, border and motifs, illustrated.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
