Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1811 House Sampler by Mary Atkinson.

George III, dated 1811. 13ins by 15.5ins. 1811 House Sampler by Mary Atkinson.

Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wooden frame with glass.

Probably stitched onto cardboard backing, but may be glued.

We cannot be sure without removing the sampler from the frame, which we will be happy to do on request.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-10.

Worked in a variety of stitches.

Verse reads 'Since tis thy sentence I must part with what is nearest. To my heart I freely that and more resine behold my Heart itself is thine my little all I give to thee thou. Hast bestow'd thy son on me.'.

Signed and dated "Mary Atkinson her Work Aged 14 in the Year 1811".

Meandering leafy border.

The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.

Copper, blue, silver, pink, gold and green colour threads used.

A good set of motifs, including a house,

a dog, birds, potted flowering plants, fir trees, a crown, a gentleman wearing a hat, holding a sword, a boat and windmills.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

A number of holes around the outer edges, particularly along the botton and in the top right hand corner, illustrated.

A couple of slight patchy stains throughout.

No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Colour run to the green coloured threads, worst illustrated.

No stretching.

The frame has some wear and a knock on the mid left hand side, illustrated,

but it is structurally sound.
