1820 Sampler by Susannah Johnson aged six

George III 1820 Sampler by Susannah Johnson aged six. 11.5ins by 12.25ins wide. Unframed.

Verse reads 'Be satisfy'd and pleas'd with what thou are Act cheerfully and well th'allotted part; Improve the present hour, be thankful for the past, And neither fear nor wish th'approaches of the last'. Loosely stitched to a paper/thin parchment backing.

The sampler has two alphabets A-Z in uppercase and one in lower case with numbers 1-26. Simple line border, eight different patterns of divider line.

Colours are all wonderfully fresh and unfaded due to the fact it has been folded away most of its life.

Worked in cross stitch and silk throughout. Brown, cream, blue, green, purple, yellow and gold colour threads used.

Signed and dated 'Susannah Johnson Aged six years 1820'.

Flowering tree motifs either side of the signature, and four crowns and coronets.

CONDTION: Very Good other than moth damage to the wool ground. Holed throughout, all illustrated above. No stains or age darkening. A few stitch losses to some of the text but generally the insect damage is restricted to the wool ground. No colour run. Professional conservator/re-mounting service available if required.
