1799 sampler by Mary Green

12.5ins by 8.5ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, black varish over mahogany frame with glass. Mounted onto a 'sympathetic' linen backing. Meandering strawberry border and dividing lines, with an extra border at the bottom. The sampler is worked in silk thread throughout in a variety of stitches in pink, cream, light brown, black, green and gold colour thread.

Verse reads 'Mary Green Is My Name And With My Needle I Work The Same By My Work You May See What Care my Parents Took of Me'. Signed and dated 'Mary Green Mark This Sampler When I was 14 Years old 1799'.

A set of traditional motifs, elaborately done, including three large baskets of flowers, dogs, birds, goats (llamas?),

blossoming trees, other trees, baskets of flowers and two butterfilies

CONDTION: Good apart from fairly extensive moth damage. The effect of the holing is minimised by the 'sympathetic' mounting. No stains or age darkening. No stitch losses, the moth damage being to the wool ground only.

Colours are reasonably strong with little fading. No colour run. The frame is in good condition and the sampler could be hung 'as is'.
