Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1822 Red and Green Woolwork Sampler.

George IV, dated 1822. 7.5ins by 15.5ins. 1822 Red and Green Woolwork Sampler.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with rippled, old glass.

Probably stitched onto cardboard backing.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-11 and family initials.

Worked in cross stitch and algerian eye.

Signed with initials and dated "1822".

Place name Cupar is mentioned.

This is a town just to the north, across the water from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Divider lines in a number of patterns.

The sampler is worked in fine wool threads throughout.

Red, green and pale blue colour threads used.

A scattering of motifs, including peacocks,

flowers, crowns and fir trees.

CONDTION: Very Good.

No holes. No stains.

Very minor stitch loss to the divider lines.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

No colour run. No stretching.

Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated,

is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
