Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

184* House Sampler by Jane Harrison

Victorian, circa 1840. 12.5ins by 9.5ins wide. Framed in a forties bakelite frame with glass. Stitched onto or stretched over a card backing.

Simple line border. The sampler is worked in cotton-like thread throughout. Blue, green, light brown, dark brown, mauve, red and cream colour threads used.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in double uppercase, and numerals 1-8, followed by another alphabet in lower case.

Worked in cross stitch throughout.

Signed and dated 'Jane Harrison Aged 8 Years December 25 184*', the last digit of the year deliberately stitched only as a dot!

Central house motif, flanked by some other kind of buildings, maybe gazebos, with greenery within, and a bird perched on the top of each.

CONDTION: Good. No holes. One stain bottom left. One small repair near the RH border, illustrated.

A few stitch losses to the border, divider lines and letters/numbers, illustrated.

Colours are faded, some more than others, but still well defined. No colour run.

Some stretching, worst illustrated, easily remedied.

The frame has some wear and small chips to the corners, illustrated, but is structurally sound, and the sampler could be hung 'as is'.
