1839 Silkwork Sampler by Hannah Waudby

Victorian, dated 1839. 20.75ins by 18.5ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with wood and paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours brown, cream, pale blue, light brown, copper, gold, black, magenta, green and pink.

Reads

'Pray God bless them that gave me this And crown them with eternal bliss In the great Heavens above'.

Verse reads

'May God direct my youthful feet

To tread his paths aright

And christ the Lord for ever keep

My veiws divinely bright

That when from Earth Im call d away

To meet my Judge my God

Ishall be enabled then to sing

The great the atoning blood'.

Signed and dated 'Hannah Waudby 1839'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a gate and tree,

a castle,

a bearded gentleman,

suns,

a dog,

a horse,

birds,

angels,

flowers,

potted flowering plants,

stags,

a bull,

fruit baskets,

fir trees,

a crown,

Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk

and fruit trees.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes to centre and edges, illustrated.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to border, verses and motifs, illustrated.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, worst illustrated, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
