MOVE TO:

1794 Silkwork Darning Sampler by Elizabeth Wifeman

George III, dated 1794. 19ins by 17ins. 1794 Silkwork Darning Sampler by Elizabeth Wifeman.

Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wooden frame with rippled, old glass.

Stitched onto linen backing.

Signed and dated "Elizabeth Wifeman 1794".

Meandering, floral border.

The sampler is worked in silk threads throughout.

Blue, red, green, copper, pink, silver and gold colour threads used.

Wonderful central motif of a bunch of flowers, with a meandering floral surround.

Four patches of extremely fine silkwork darning each with different stitches, patterns and colours

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

A number of holes around the outer edges of the border.

The holing is caused by the stretching of the sampler over it's backing.

The holing is worst along the top, illustrated.

Uniform darkening of the backing canvas.

There are a few dead insects in the lower left hand corner. These could easily be removed if the sampler was taken out of the frame.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.

No colour run. Some stretching, worst illustrated.

The frame has some wear, illustrated,

but is structurally sound.
