Detailed
description and pictorial study of Sampler
|
MOVE TO:
1793 Sampler by Elizabeth Hawksworth.
George III, dated 1793. 11ins by 16.5ins. 1793 Sampler by Elizabeth Hawksworth.
Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Loose mounted onto a wooden backing. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-15.
Worked in cross stitch and algerian eye.
A Verse entitled 'On the Diligent Ant' reads 'The Ant against cold winter wisely hoards, Provision which the summers wealth affords, Reading a silent message to Mankind, That they in diligence be not behind.'.
Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Hawksworth July 22nd 1793".
Meandering strawberry border.
The sampler is worked in fine wool thread throughout.
Light and dark pink, and green colour threads used.
A scattering of motifs along the bottom, including crowns, hearts and flowers.
CONDTION: Slightly distressed.
A few holes, less than 0.25 inches in size. The holes (illustrated) are located in the top left hand corner,
in the centre,
in the middle right hand border
and the and in the bottom right hand corner of the sampler.
The holes are barely visible, blending into the backing colour.
No stains. A couple of stitch losses to the verse and the alphabets, illustrated.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run. No stretching.
Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated,
a few worm holes on the bottom, but is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
